Media and Society

The course introduces students to critical analytical media studies in its historical and contemporary contexts through an exploration of key concepts and theoretical traditions. The course will focus on the nature of mediated communication, the functions and roles of media and institutions that help to define media's place in society.

Reading Media Forms

The course will introduce students to methods of critically analysing different media forms (print, radio, television and new media) and genres using key concepts and theories in Media Studies. The course will closely focus on individual media forms of print and visual cultures, broadcast and new media and their various genres.

Entry requirements for undergraduate degrees

To study with us you need an admission points score (APS) of 34 or higher, a 5 symbol for English HL or First Additional Language and a full matric exemption. For more information please check the Wits admission requirements page here
 
If you are older than 23, an application will be considered on the basis of your matric school-leaving certificate (leading to a conditional mature age exemption) or appropriate post-school studies. All mature age applications will be required to take an NBT (National Benchmark Test) before acceptance into the BA degree.
