Sarah Chiumbu - Senior Visiting Research Fellow

Sarah H Chiumbu is a Senior Research Specialist in the Human and Social Development Research Programme at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Before joining the HSRC in December 2014, she spent 6 years at the University of Witwatersrand where she was a Senior Lecturer in the Media Studies Department. She continues her association with Wits as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow in the same department. Sarah holds a PhD and MA in Media Studies from the University of Oslo, Norway. Her research interests include the following: media, democracy & citizenship, new and alternative media, social movements, and critical policy studies. Sarah also has an abiding interest in critical theory, particularly, postcolonial theories, decoloniality and African political thought.

Anne Schumann - Honorary Research Fellow

Anne Schumann is a Lecturer at the Institut de Musicologie et Direction Chorale d'Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Media Studies Department at the University of the Witwatersrand between 2012 and 2014. She holds a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London). Her current research projects focus on African popular culture (including cartoons, dance, music, and video) and the interaction between digital technologies, popular music, and cultural entrepreneurship.

Wendy Willems - Honorary Research Fellow

Wendy Willems is Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She was Senior Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand between 2010 and 2012. She holds a PhD in Media and Film Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Her current research projects focus on mobile media, platform power and urban space; postcolonial approaches to media and communication; and the politics of global academic knowledge production. Her published work in these areas has appeared in journals such as Communication Theory, Popular Communication, Telematics and Informatics, World Development, Critical Arts: South-North Cultural and Media Studies, Africa Development, African Identities, and the Journal of Southern African Studies. She is co-editor (with Ebenezer Obadare) of Civic Agency in Africa: Arts of Resistance in the 21st Century (Oxford: James Currey, 2014) and co-founder (with Winston Mano) of the Journal of African Media Studies.



Antonio Ciaglia web

Antonio Ciaglia - Honorary Research Fellow

Antonio is a qualitative researcher, specializing in interviews, documentary, legal, and policy analysis, desk-based research, news media content analysis, and fuzzy-set comparative qualitative analysis. His research interests include media and democratization, public service broadcasting, and comparative political communication.  He is carrying out a research project on the role of public service broadcasting in the processes of democratization and democratic consolidation. Antonio’s articles have appeared in the European Journal of Communication, Journalism, The International Journal of Cultural Studies, and the International Communication Gazette, and he has attended multiple international conferences, including ICA, SACOMM, ECPR, and IPSA.
