Prinola Govenden is a Teaching Fellow for the Media Studies Department and is currently completing a PhD looking at issues of print media ownership, power and control influences on diversity of content. She is a recipient of the SAHUDA (South African Humanities Deans’ Association) Scholarship. She has a Masters by Research in Media Studies (with distinction) Prinola also works as the Marketing and Communications Liaison for Wits Centre for Diversity Studies headed by Prof. Melissa Steyn the NRF Research Chair for Critical Diversity Studies. Prinola has previously worked for Wits University’s Strategic Planning Division and the Press Freedom Commission (Chaired by former Chief Justice Pius Langa), University of Johannesburg’s Communications division, and for the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation. She started her career in civil society at a human Rights based media NGO as Head of Media Policy. Her research interests are Critical Political economy of the media, ownership, power and control, diversity, media policy and regulation, African media, public service broadcasting.
